I am restoring a 1979 ford f-100 Ranger XLT. It has a 1983 model 351w Police intercepter in it with the 4 speed auto ( AOD I think) tranny. I have 2.75 gears in it right now and want to go to a set of 3.73 gears because my tranny is always shifting in and out of OD when Im driving around town, I have to get to 60 mph to shift into OD and stay there and I have no take off power at all. Does anyone know how bad my speedo will be off and if so how can I recalibrate it and if going to a 3.73 will help my shifting around town. I will be posting pics of my project soon. Thanks.
first of, around town you do not want to drive in OD. It will kill your trans. Try driving it in DRIVE for a while first.
Secondly, they make several different speedo gears to compensate for the gear ratios.
Thanks, Do you know if the AOD tranny has the elect. overdrive. My selector just has D,2,1. I didnt know if running it in 2 would actually be 2nd or drive.
