I'm looking at the ebay headers as my next mod. How durable are they? I remember seeing something about protecting them from stuff splashing on them, but wasn't sure if that was for cosmetic or functional reasons.
I'd like to do gears first, but finding used gears seems to be next to impossible and new ones are way outta my price range right now. Especially since I have a 4x4 and will need to do two axles. I can do the gear installs myself, so there's no (chargeable) labor there.
As with any red-hot exhaust manifold or header, if you splash cold water/mud onto them when they are red hot, they will crack, or fatigue and crack over time.
Let's put it this way - water hasn't touched my ebay headers yet, and I've gone through some STUFF. There are water spots on them, but nothing big. You'd have to be REALLY bogging through mud with oversize tires to really get anything on them.
Wrap is good for the sound, so I hear (pun intended), but as for protecting them, dunno, containing the heat might make them fatigue quicker.
I have always heard wrap is not for an exhaust with mufflers! It is designed for use on drag race applications where you run headers with no pipe nor muffler..
Wraps are designed to keep the heat in the header which will in turn cause it to run hotter and fatigue quicker on a daily driven car. It will also cause the temp at the head and valves rise by not allowing the heat to escape through the tubes of the header.
Check the posts by Mr_Pipeline as he has experience with some ebay headers and the V10 and he's not real happy with the headers. I think he's on the Excursion forum.
