Question Have some gauge questions

From reading my signature you can see I have a 6.0 running that I have been running with an SCT for about 75Kplus. Runs like a top. Being a mechanic myself (heavy marine) I figured I could install the gauges myself. Havent tried yet. I ordered Autometer NV oil pressure and pyro gauges about 8months ago and never installed them because i just dont have the time. I called a local very well known shop to just let them install for 175 and they told me there is no where to get oil pressure on the 6.0. that I would have to take out the factory sender and then the dash wont work and I will get lights and such. Was told cant use a "T". Then told me not to be concerned with oil pressure as once it hits 60psi it dumps back to the pan. This I know but me being a mechanic myself I dont like having a stupid High Low gauge. My factory doesnt EVER move.I could smoke the tires down the street NEVER moves. I dont like that. Question is then. Can this be true there is no place to get a reading and if so is everyone just happy knowing ehhh needles up must be good. Also told me there was no place to get a coolant temp if I wanted one. Thanks for the help..

Ryan

I'm not an expert, but that has never stopped me from commenting.

Your OEM oil sender is actually a switch. It is on at 7# and above. Your dash gauge is the equivalent of an idiot light.

Your 6.0 will stop running if the lubrication oil pressure were to fail, because the high pressure oil pump relies on sufficient lubrication pressure. The engine would just stop, without damage due to lack of lubrication. So most people don't bother with a base engine oil pressure gauge.

But some people do like an oil pressure gauge anyway, and I think a simple way is to get a billet aluminum oil filter cap with a tapped port for your A/M sender to the gauge. Your dash idiot light would still work as normal.

You can get everything but EGT's, Fuel Pressure, and Oil pressure through the OBDII port. I'm not sure how the trans temp is read or if you can read that through the OBDII port. Most run a gauge for that. They are semi correct about the oil pressure. The dash gauge only takes 7.5 lbs to be in the normal range I'm not even sure that it would set a CEL if it didn't function as the PCM doesn't read it. If you loose low oil pressure then you loose high oil pressure and the motor shuts down since there isn't anything to make the injectors fire. You can get a billet oil filter cap with a port tapped in the top to take your oil pressure from Or you can tee it from the sender in the motor but that is a real pain. I see that you are running a bypass oil system. There should be an easily accessable port from there to take the pressure from.

Question

Thanks that is a great point. I do have an Amsoil By-Pass with the billet cap with the tap. I can just put a "T" there. The pyro gauge shouldnt be a problem. I really would like to tap it into the driverside exhaust manifold instead of the down pipe. Anyone have any insite to that...

I wouldn't waste my time with the downpipe. Temp's there can be a little flaky and in the manifold they are very consistent/predictable. It's fairly easy to drill and tap the exhaust manifold on the truck from underneath or by taking out the fender liner. I think there's probably a write up in the 6.0 tech folder at the beginning of this forum.

You can monitor trans temps through OBDll port. I use the Edge Insight to monitor all expect Fuel Pressure which you need a gauge for that..

I was fairly certain that it could be, but I have analog gauges and didn't know for certain.
