Vacuum test

So to check the vacuum do I need to hook the gauge up to were the advance goes on the carb or on the intake manifold somewhere?

Ok usually there is a big 11/16 plug in the FRONT of the intake manifold, from the standpoint of you standing directly in front of the grille. this unscrews and from there you can thread in just a tester gauge or can run a little dash gauge up through your firewall into your cab somewhere. May I ask why you need a Vacuum gauge?

I resently did a tune up and in the 10 yrs of having this truck i have never hooked a vacuum gauge up to it. I thought it might be a good ideal to get some numbers off the engine. I did a search for this and read about 15 pages of stuff, but no one said where they hooked the gauge up too.

Connect it to manifold vacuum - in many cases this is not where the distributor advance connects. Most vacuum gauges come with a 3/16" or 1/4" vacuum hose - there should be a vacuum tree on your firewall or on the back of the intake manifold that is used to distribute manifold vacuum to the transmission modulator valve (if you have an automatic), power brakes, heater controls, etc. You should be able to find what you need there. My vacuum gauge's fitting is stepped so that it will accept both 3/16" and 1/4" hoses - usually the fittings on the vacuum tree are at least 1/4". My Edelbrock carburetor has a 3/16" fitting on the front of the carburetor, and that's what I use.

I have mine on my 302 hooked to the tree on the intake manifold behind the carb. Same place as mentioned above where my auto trans modulator is hooked and vacuum into the cab.
