Truck dead- ignition switch?

1991 F150 5.8

Acts like it's a dead battery, but when I jiggled the tumbler I got the dome light to come on and the alert tone started going off. But then as soon as I tried to start it, acts like the battery is completely dead- won't even click. Tried jumping it and didn't get so much as a crank, so I'm guessing ignition switch or something related to it.

Suggestions?

Thanks.

Well I replaced the positive cable about 2 weeks ago, so perhaps it's time I give the negative cable a look...

Starter is brand new. Replaced it about the same time I replaced the bat. cable 'cause I thought that was the problem at the time.

That's not to say a brand new starter can't be bad, but I'll look at the negative bat. cable first.

Well a bad starter is not going to kill all power to the truck....Think about this for a minute!!!!!! So check the cables very close, try putting jumper cable from neg post on battery to the engine block, that should bypass the neg cable at least enough to prove if it is at fault... And recheck the pos. cable you replaced recently, could it be loose somewhere?

+1 to your rep for the correct answer. I cut some insulation off the negative cable and found the fibers to be very dark- a good indicator that the cable is bad. Quick run to the parts store for a new cable and a half hour later, all is well. I guess I should have checked the negative cable when I replaced the positive.

Thanks again for the help.
