loosing everything, problem in switch

So about once a week I go to start the truck and nothing..it's like the battery is dead. I have had some odd issues that was found to be in the switch.
Either I have to jiggle the switch or bang on the steering column. Then I have to reset all my radio station setting and what not. Well today, it clicked like the battery WAS dead. I checked wiring, put on jumper cables and tried again....nothing, banged on the column...still nothing.....left it alone {got pissed} and tried a few minutes ago...it fired right up.

So what exactly is in the switch that would act like it's dead when I turn the key? And how hard is it to change it? I was looking under the dash at the wires that go up to there, seems like alot, and they seem like there is no slack on the wires at all......am I in for a huge task?

If you are losing your radio memory, I don't think it's the switch. The switch has nothing to do with the radio memory does it? I would look first at the large battery cables, both the battery ends and the connection on the starter relay and the connection on the engine block. Go ahead and take the battery cables off, and then take the other ends loose, clean them up and re-tighten.

There should also be a smaller wire hooked to the large starter relay terminal that goes to the battery. When you redo the bat connection, the smaller wire connection will be checked too, but follow this smaller wire down and there will be some factory splices in the wiring. Make sure these are not corroded.

Well I actually did that a few months ago. All new cables, new connectors, new ground to the block, cleaned the area at the ground.
The reason I think it in the switch is when I turn in on and it's acting up, I loose everything, like someone took the battery out ya know.
I'm doing a search on the issue now in our search area.
When it happends, I band on the column and everything starts working again.
What I wonder is this.....I mounted a after market tach gauge on the column. I used a very small framer screw at 1st, maybe 1/8 inch long, ran it in to the metal part of the column, problem was I couldn't tun the switch..so I took it off and mounted it with a large hose clamp. I'm afraid I nicked a wire or something and over the months it's been slowly getting worse as I start my truck.....? Hell, I don't know......lol

It's not to hard to get to the ignition switch (not the tumbler) you have to drop your column to get at it (2 Bolts) if you have a auto you have to dissconect the shift indicator wire so you don't break it and then there are 2 small sheetmetal hex screws holding it on,might need to be adjusted but they are cheap enough to replace so I would do it anyway as it is apart.

I don't think you hit any wires at the top of the column but maybe bent or damaged part of the switch rod acculator mechanism.
