Tranny Swap
Alright, this is what i got. 77 Ford Hi-Boy 4x4 with a 74 460, C-6 auto. These are the parts that I have laying around. Bellhousing, linkage, flywheel, manual trans, center driveshaft and crossmember from a 75 hi-boy with a 400. I also have the pedal assembly/column from a 76 hi-boy. Is this everything that I will need to swap out the auto and make the 77 a manual?? I also have a flywheel and starter from a 390 if I would need to use that instead?? Will the manual pedal assembly bolt right into the 77 with the auto??
Also, I read somewhere that when using a 400 bellhousing on a 460, the pilot bearing needs to go in the small hole deep inside the crank, or the bellhousing needs to be spaced back, otherwise there is clearance issues??
Please let me know of any other parts I will need. I'm trying to line everything up before I tear into the 77. I'd like to try and get this done in a day/weekend.
The column support for the standard pedals use large bushings so its narrower inside I think than the auto trans support, there's several ways to do it but the easiest for me was to swap it.. If the support is part of your setup then no problem, it will bolt right in but check how the brake pedal hooks up to the rod going to the master cylinder, mine was different but mine was 74 to 79
From what I've been reading, since I'm using a bellhousing from an older 400, my best bet would be to use the 390 flywheel and clutch setup for that flywheel. I also read that I do indeed need to use the inside hole of the crank for the pilot bushing. Once this far along, does a guy just use a 460 starter?? How does everyone mount their clutch linkage on the 460 block or will the bracketry from the 400 work??
Any other tips/information that would be helpful??
