My '88 3.0 Aerostar had 220.000 miles and did not use any oil. Wife over heated it (water hose broke) cracked head and one piston broke and had a hole burnt in it. I know what damage overheating can do but everything else looked fine and the cylinder was not bad so I honed it out and installed one new piston.
It ran great, with no exhaust smoke, or oil leaks. BUT...after about 500 miles it was over 2 qts. low of oil. I drove it about 2000 miles adding a qt. of oil every 300 miles. When it developed a miss I was sure the plugs were fouled. SURPRISE...all plugs looked great, completely dry with light grey insulators.
Can an engine burn this much oil, run good and not smoke or show on the plugs? I know there's only 3 places the oil can go (out the exhaust pipe - on the ground - or in the radiator coolant.)
the only other thing i can think of is your engine might be slinging oil out through the main seals. check around the front and particularly the rear main seals of your engine.
