welcome to the forum maam, you know, my dear wife of over twenty years is a pretty good wrench herself. i actually enjoy her around to be honest,, ill tell you why, sometimes a woman can look at the exact same problem as a man, and often, come up with a solution that is very different, and many times better. i never minded at all. we are into whatever works the best, and its fun, you all use the other side of the brain or something like that, thats outa my league. but whatever it is . it works paul and sandy
I agree 6CylBill. I think they look really good too. You don't see them around that much. The six is what came in it and so I wanted to keep it that way. Plus I've heard they can take a beating which is good. Ha ha.
Thank you father/son. I have done that several times to the guys that were in my class. They didn't like it that I came up with a better idea though lol. Oh well. It worked
Wolfie, the only thing that brakes my heart is that you could have built that 300 for more power. You can pull 200 horse out of those carb'd 300's easy. People have built them for 300 and 350 horse also, with torque numbers north of 400 ft lbs.
The engine is still out, correct? You should consider doing a 2BBL swap with a cam and headers.
With all that said, there's nothing wrong with a stock rebuild. The carb'd 300's are pulling pigs, making 255 ft lbs somewhere around 1,400 rpm.
Have you considered EFI manifolds? A near direct bolt on that will give you a bit more grunt.
Actually 6CylBill I did get some exhaust manifolds off of a 96 F150 300. They weren't on for the show because the Y pipe was still on them and didn't have time to fix them and make them look good. About the 2BBL, I have never heard of one before for a 300. The only thing I have been able to find is a 4 barrel. So if you know of where I could find one and/or an adapter please let me know!!!
Wolfie10, its entirely possible to run a 2bbl on these engines. I've seen an adapter plate to adapt a 2bbl to fit the stock 1bbl intake. Also if you order the Offenhauser C series intake manifold, you can put a reversible 4 to 2 adapter on there to run the 2bbl with as well.
You did an awesome job with that engine, and I dearly wish my engine looked that good!
Ok,! I'll have to start looking around. It will be awhile before it goes into the truck because I still need rockers as well. There's also a few other things I want to do to the truck first.. gauges, etc. I still have all stock gauges and I want to be able to watch everything better.
Thanks desperado_18_2000. I was going to paint it pink and purple but my dad really didn't want me to. Oh well, I think the green and silver made it look sharp.
If you are going to have to install new rockers anyway, you really should think about doing the chevy rocker swap. These rocker arms come from a 1975 chevy c-10 wjth a 250 straight six. That is if you have stud mount rockers, and not the later bolt down rocker arms. You'll get a little better breathing out of a otherwise stock 300.
Its something worth considering, if you want to add a little more umph to your rebuild.
As far as I'm aware of Wolfie, the Chevy 250 I6 rockers should be a direct bolt on deal with no other mods needed. I wouldn't see any reason to have to change the pushrods and lifters as all you are doing is opening the valves a little more, much like installing a higher lift cam, but without having to modify the valve train.
I think he was saying he likes the way your father thinks, if it was his idea to have you start out on a good ol' I6. But, should have left the paint scheme to you.
Personally, I think the pink and purple color scheme would have been awesome. It've just been so different, and fit the builder.
I like your engine, it's neat to see.
And as others have said, the EFI manifolds, plus a 2bbl (or 4bbl) carb make a completely different engine. You'll definitely impress a few in the class with it.
Ah ok I understand what he's saying now. It was his first sentence that threw me off. My dad actually didn't like Fords before I got my truck but he said that the 6 would be better in fuel mileage than any of the 351's. But then after I got my truck he went out and got an I6 because he liked it so much!
I thought it would be cool to have a pink and purple engine but the green is my favorite color.
As for the exhaust goes..I've noticed an increase in the old engine in my truck now. A kid had this truck before so there's quite a few problems with it. The exhaust was falling off so I crawled under there and it wasn't being held on by anything so now there's just a pipe from the manifold to about the back of the transfer case. It gets up and goes a little better with the muffler off of it so I will definatly look into getting it straight piped!
