Towing perfomance

I recently went on a camping, abalone diving trip with trailer in tow. First big trip since I installed the John Woods tranny. In 95f weather my trans temps ran at about 185 to 190. This is in 80 tow setting, 8k trailer. My miliage actually went up, 10.66mpg, the best I have gotten while towing this trailer.

Nice catch Terry. That's a rare treat right there. I have been in the restaurant business for over 30 years, and the last time I remember handling it on a commercial level was in the early '80's. There's nothing quite like it.

We go every year. Usually a couple of times. We have a big feast at the coast and then get some to bring home. I think the getting them is just as fun and enjoyable as they are tastey. We always spear some fish to go along with the abalone too.

I have the john woods trans also. I went to lake mead memorial day with a 30 foot weekend warrior in tow, It had no toys or holding tanks full because of hook ups their. I ran about 155 degree's up there, but on the way back about 183 degrees. I was wondering if this is a little hot also. I am going to get a 37 or 38 foot toy hauler and it will be heavey. I did put the 6.0 tc on with new radiator to run the coolant thur it also. I have E99 cc lb 4x4 and stock exhaust for now w/ trans gauge and egt. It run about 135 around town. DPtuner w' 40t 60t 60e 80e and 100. I was running on 40 tow had lots of power but had to back down to 53mph on big hills for egt, it got to 1100 plus before backing down then under 1000 at 53. So exhaust is in my future soon along with boost gauge and oil temp. THis smog thing in california is my concern though I have a cat on this truck and only the factory cat is approve as far as I know. Hope this helps, Chet God Bless

You can bring down those temps with one of these http://www.dieselsite.com/index.asp?...ROD&ProdID=205

I have had one for about 4 or 5 years. Works great. Your air temps are against you but you are not pulling severe grades (ie 6, 7, 8, 10 % grades) for long periods so you will like the results of the auxiliary cooler.

I just pulled across the Great Divide between Durango and Alamosa crossing over the pass at around 10k feet. Was a big steep long pull at about 30 to 35 mph. Trans temp got up around 200 for that. The rest of the 4,450 mile trip, trans ran around 160. This is pulling a 26.5 foot fifth-wheel.

Hope this helps

My trailer is a 28 foot bumper pull, at 8k. I was running in 80tow and in overdrive, when not on curvey or steep roads. My normal freeway around town temps are about 160 in 90 plus weather. On the previous tranny I was running about 200 to 210 towing so 190 tops on inclines is much better. Ran about 180 to 185 cruising on the flat freeway, 65ish mph.

crazymut, do you have a cat still in place. I guess you don't have to smog if your in the service from out of state. This 30 foot had a slide so I'm not sure what its weight is. If I where to tow on 80 I think my egt would be off the chart with stock exhaust and intake. But I had know real problem in 40T for power just egt on big hills, or a lot of grades at low speed. I use overdrive on the flats to but kick it out on grades to keep the cool air going.

Never had a cat. Mine is a "non catylist" model from the factory. Also have 4in exhaust from turbo back. I also kick it out of od when on grades or below hiway speeds.
