Okay, in the last five years, I've been employed at the dealer I'm at right now, going on any kind of road test is a nightmare to say the least (bumper to bumper traffic). Being paid flat rate (by PER JOB), I can't afford to waste time on the road for too long (time that I could be in the shop, doing other work). That said, on any major repair that I've done (engines, heads/gaskets, 6.0L coolers), I make it a routine to ask the service advisor to call the customer (or I will call directly) and request for authorization for me the drive the vehicle home for a night or two (I live 37 kms. from my workplace). I especially prefer to have 6.0L trucks for the weekend after completing a stud job. This way, I can monitor coolant level, ECT/EOT temps, turbo boost, fluid leaks etc. etc. etc. before the Monday morning following, when I am fully comfortable releasing the vehicle back to the anxiously awaiting customer. So far, this has worked out very well, and no customer of mine has ever refused.
