Having problems with the r12 system in my 93 again. I had her fixed last season, and she worked great all summer, but now..... The clutch engages, and it starts to blow cool, but the clutch continues to cycle on and off about every ten seconds. The clutch seems to be in good shape, and the compressor seems to be working. I don't have any gauges, but I was hoping someone could give me a few ideas before I think about taking it to the shop again.
I know you don't want to think this but, is it possible the system has leaked down again? The compressor short-cycling is a typical symptom of a system with too little refrigerant in it. If so, I know there are ways to test it for leaks but I don't know enough about refrigeration & A/C systems to give any sort of tutorial.
Anything is possible, but it has never leaked before (I had the high pressure switch replaced last summer). All of my hoses seem to be in pretty good shape. I may put the volt meter on there and make sure the clutch signal isn't cutting out for some reason.
If you want to confirm that you have a low freon level with out a set of gauges disconect the low pressure switch and insert a small jumper wire into the plug on the wire harness if the compressor stops cycling and runs steady get your walet out and buy some more r12. you can get it at some auto parts stores but you must have a HVAC licence. I just bought some last month 12oz for about $48 sounds like your going to need at least 2 cans. Or you can do the smart thing and just convert to the 134a and then when you get the leak it will only cost about $8 a can. but thats just my opinion.
I plan to convert to 134 eventualy, but the compressor will need to be replaced, along with half of the other stuff. Right now i'm just trying to get more info.
Unless your compressor is bad you do not need to replace it.
you will change some of the orings you will need to empty out all of the compressor oil in the compressor and the collection tank blow out the remaining hoses with air to remove as much oil as you can from them. then you need to reinstall the corect 134a oil pump the system down to a vacuum (check for leaks - the vacuum should hold) and fill up the ac system with the 134a. This takes some time but can be done without spending a arm and a leg
