I've asked a couple times about lockers for my truck. Its a 63' f100 with a 292. I'd like to lock the front differential somehow, but only part time. So I've done a little research and it seems like a mini spool might work. My understanding is that they are used for racing and it seems like people put them in the rear axles for traction.
Can you put them in the front and use it like a locker? I found one for the dana 44 and they are significantly less expencive than a locker. I'd like it to lock when I take it off road, but when I drive it around town I'd like to dissconect it that way the wheels work the way they are supposed to around turns (not in 4 wheel drive). I have locking hubs as well as the transfercase to dissconnect it. Would that work?
no. a spool joins the axleshafts together permanantly, as in no differentiation. with the hubs unlocked there won't be an issue in 2x4, but to be quite honest with you, you won't want anything more than a trac-lok limited slip up front, otherwise you will have a hard time steering and probably break things in the front end when in 4x4, and you will no longer be able to use 4x4 safely on road in bad weather. jeff's bronco graveyard will most likely have the cheapest prices on trac-loks, i suggest you go that route.
Try the L/S or a selectable. If you have a mini-king pin set up I would not bother messing with it, parts are hard to find and the mini king pin will not stand up to serious abuse.
So i assume an aussie locker would work better? Thanks for the help by the way, im glad i didn't buy one. They are so cheap its pretty tempting to just buy one.
aussie, or any other "lunchbox" locker. they are cheaper because they just replace the spider gears instead of the whole case. they aren't as strong as a full case locker, but they should work decent for your truck.
Thanks again guys. I'm not planning to do and serious hard core off roading, my truck isn't built for that. I just dont want full differientation like how it has now. I got stuck in some mud at my own house and decided it would be best if all 4 wheel actually turned...
