I've done some searching on the site and can't find an answer to my question so here it goes. I have an '03 F-250 with the 6.0. I've done an EGR cooler delete and that is really the only issue I have had in the last 165K miles until recently. I have developed a come and go miss while the engine is cold or at least been off for a couple hours. Once the engine temperature comes up to normal the miss goes away and it runs like a champ. I've heard of issues with injectors, High pressure oil pumps, FICM's and so on but I have not heard of anyone describing my issue. Any suggestions on where to start? I can't afford to take it to the dealer and I don't really trust the dealer near me anyway.
Cold miss, hot run normally is most likely an injector. You should purchase something like a Scan Gage II to scan for codes to make sure that is your only issue and to pinpoint which injector, if that's truly your problem, it is. If you need more help please return here.
Could be a bad glow plug. Does the miss last longer on cooler or colder days? Probably harder to tell since it is Summer.
If you are adventuresome you can check the GPs by removing the strip that is between the bottom of the valve cover and above the exhaust manifold. It is one piece and has 4 GP connectors attached to it that go down in the head. If you do remove, make sure the connectors are not broken. Get a test light (thing that looks like a screwdriver with a wire coming out of the top), attach wire to + battery terminal and touch the top of each GP. If the GP is good the light will come on.
first off the gpcm is only on for 2 min. imo you would need to have more then one out to cause an issue.
do not use a test light as suggested it really wont tell you if they are good. that will tell you only that they are not open. 2 you do not need to remove the glowplug buss bar you can test them at the 4 pin connector on the buss bar. please use a dvom and it should read less then 2ohms per a glowplug.
