will this compression tester do the trick?

my truck is back home and I'm just getting started pulling the parts truck apart so I'd like a few more vitals on the motor(s)
I'm wondering if this cheep peice of junk from china central will do to get compression numbers a couple times a year or if I need something better

havent tried it, but im sure it will. your max compression will be around 440 so you are good there. theres gotta be an adapter to fit the idi.

Ok, just looked at it closer since mine is on the engine stand:

The adapter they list for our 6.9/7.3 is INCORRECT. The one that has the correct thread bottoms out on the tapered glow plug seat before the threads catch. There's another small adapter that *looks* like it would work but the threads appear to be slightly off and it appears to have a taper more along the lines of that of an NPT taper.

The compression fittings have a schroeder valve in them. If you take the adapter with the proper thread you could pull the schroeder valve out, cut it to the required length, grind a nice seat on it to match that of a glow plug and it will fit, but then you'll need a shroeder vavle/check valve in the system yet to hold the pressure back.

Typical chineese junk...

[edit] The adapter would allow you to re-tap the fitting and install the schroeder valve higher up, however good luck finding a shroeder valve tap! [/edit]

<s>Ahh just noticed I have a slightly different set than you posted as well.. it's the same item number but mine has more parts????</s>
odd... that's HF for ya lol

Nevermind.. it IS the same but packaged differently in that picture as it shows adapters screwed together.. mine is "some assembly required" I guess!

Yeah I remembered that thread but I didn't search it out again. What I'm curious of now though is *which* adapter he was using?

What they list as the correct adapter is:
1. too long for the threads to catch
2. the wrong thread pitch

The one with the correct thread is too long for the threads to catch as well

The 3rd option looks like the threads are 'similar enough to work' but looks to have an NPT taper to it.

The only one that will screw in w/o modification is the NPT tapered short plug with *almost* the same threads but not quite.

I think he was doomed before he started off in regards to snapping it off. I've also learned that when it comes to chineese metal fasteners/parts that you don't tighten them beyond what a 5 year old could manage

I got the harbour freight kit on sale. You can look in mags for 20% coupons even.

Yes they are on crack, the adapter for our trucks does not fit.

BUT what I did is take the one that was supposed to fit and an old glow plug and made my own piece so that it would thread into our engine, and used the tip on each end to attach and work with the kit.

I could take a picture, but I think you get the idea. I am not even good at it and used a bench cheap torch and solder. Make sure you don't drip any on the valve tip because the gage needs that to work and hold a reading.

I prepped my setup after the engine was warmed up and even ran the test twice. It held up for every fire and held the pressure.

You can use the guage in HF but need an adapter of the specific threads and better quality. I was told the HF adapters are POT metal and will break off in the hole.....

Make that x 3!! lol Easier than modifying it now that I have the gauge set haha quick-connect fittings look a bit different though so I won't say for sure that it will work unless I'd try it.
