hey guys any good tranny guys here, need help and advice. i was going
on a service call, i had been on the road for about an hour and my
od light started flashing. i pulled off at an exit up to a stop light
and had no forward or reverse. i put shifter in park and then shifted
to drive, not overdrive and the truck moved. i drove it home about
70 miles with no overdrive. i get a slip code p1728. does this mean
new tranny, torque converter, etc. it has done this twice. its full of
fluid. filter is new. any help please what can i check?
thanx alot guys

p.s. is there another tranny that will work. im not pulling anything heavy.
No problem bud. IIRC a P1728 is a transmission slip error-converter clutch error. From pretty much EVERYONE that has given me an educated answer it seems like a new torque converter will fix that problem but they also all suggested a rebuild while the tranny was already down to avoid it again in the future.
The E4 is not that smart to tell you its a tc slip.
The 4R has a better chance due to it has a input
shaft sensor. The E4 can only produce a slip code
while in OD with tc locked. It uses cps and vss to
see the slip.
Right. The E4OD can only tell that something is slipping. It can only check when the trans is in 4th gear and the torque converter is locked.
hey guys thanx for the info. hey mark is it hard to rebuild the tranny.
i dont have 3000.00 for new tranny. i can pull the tranny myself.
i can replace torque converter, but never rebuilt one. is there any
training video's out there to help me.

I had the same thoughts myself mostly because of the cost. I had almost convinced myself to do it. Luckily I threw some red flags that stopped me. I am pretty dang mechanically inclined so I felt the same way but when guys who build engines and custom hot rods and what not told me they never tapped into an auto tranny or "only did it once", I have some serious reservations. You should be able to take your truck in and get a shop to drop, rebuild, and replace your tranny for under $3000. Much less, take it down yourself and take it in to have the benchwork done then reinstall it yourself. I was quoted at $1200 for benchwork alone if I brought it in and $2400 for the whole drop, rebuild, and install. Seems like the best way to go for a man on a budget. Though I wanted a 5 speed, found a cheap donor truck, and did the swap for a reasonable price.
in my time, i have rebuilt some C6's, C4's and 1 powergulide. the most simple trannys on the planet. but if / when my E4OD dies, iam gonna debate myself on digging into it. nowadays there are so many online tools and videos that i might try.
