WOW I have owned a 2000 x for 9 years one month. It has been more than satisfactory vehicle there is no replacement for it on the road. I have been a week with out it and really begining to regret selling it.Also owned a exp. not even in same class. Ford realy has a special interest with the x. you now for guys like me that need a work truck but also be able to take six people and luggage to town it is perfect. There is deffinately some room for improvement on some things.but as is every vehicle. I think someday I,ll buy another one to sit in garage. Any way farewell to x its been good ride.
I know I won't sell mine either. If anything, I would pick up an additional 01 or 02 or early 03 7.3 L diesel to compliment my V10. Right now, money is a bit tight. What scares me to death about owning a diesel is the Calif. Air Resources Board and their zeal to put us back to the stone ages (before the industrial revolution as far as air quality goes). They just recently pushed to have diesel trucks to require a smog check for '98 and up model years.
MISSING YOUR EX ? CANT FIND A 'CLEAN' ONE ? GET A SUBURBAN of the same year INSTEAD !
My EX is a '05, 4wd V-10 with sway bars. It is a "cream puff" in that it has always been garaged, now has approx. 30,000 mi. on it, so it is effectively NEW in every respect. I had a sharp low mileage 1991 Sub. 2500. These are similar chassis, in that both are solid axles, front and rear.
The loads we tow are our boat ( 3 axle trailer ) total weight approx. 11,000 lbs. Or our collector car and its 3 axle trailer - 10,000 lbs +.
I was VERY surprised that at highway speeds, the additional weight of the Suburban did not give me any advantage in stability. The somewhat "stiffer" spring rates of the Sub. probably account for that.
The 2500 Sub. i owned, incidentally, similarly equipped in that it had a four speed trans, with a 350, the "top gear", like the EX, was an overdrive. I am taking a rough guess that my V-10 is about 400 cu. in. I do not notice any performance advantage of the EX - probably because it is around 1,600 lbs heavier than the Sub.
Had I bought a 2005 2500 Sub. instead of the EX., I could have still enjoyed a four wheel drive, but had the advantage of the independent front suspension.
The sad fact is that our EX's were created the cheapest way possible...just stamping out a rear body shell for existing Ford trucks, using existing "off the shelf" running gear, then topping off with way too soft spring rates.
If I understand what I read correctly, the EXPEDITION now has independent suspension BOTH front and rear. My understanding is that the EXPEDITION, being somewhat lighter than our EX's, would be a direct comparison to present day 2500 series Suburbans. I wonder how the new EXPEDITION tows very heavy loads, compared to a current-issue 2500 Series Suburban.
I had my first Ex since 2000 until a city crane came along and destroyed it last year. It took until 2 weeks ago to find a suitable replacement. Now Ive upgraded to a 2004 Diesel limited. Its GREAT to be "home".
