Hi, I'm very happy to be able to say that I've made a ton of progress on my 79 F150 over the past few months, and am now thankfully moving on to the smaller problems, but, they are still problems, and todays is:
Thermostat, I think? The temperature guage on my dashboard is always pinned all the way towards the cold side, and I have no real reason to think the engine is running particularly hot, but I'd like to know. I believe it is hooked up to the thermostat, and that the thermostat is that little thing with the wire coming off the back near the front of the engine block. Should I replace the therm.? Do the gauges break that often? Give me any thoughts, Thanks, AleX.
The part where the wire is running is probably the engine temperature sensor. If your temp. gauge reads cold no matter how warm the engine is running, replacing that sensor would be the first step I would take. Even if the thermostat is stuck open, your gauge would still register some sort of heat after driving.
