So my motor is still in the air since I jacked up the engine for an oil pump replacement, I figured now is the time to put long tube headers on it... Problem is, here in Virginia, emissions are part of safety inspection. And the truck, an 89, won't be emissions exempt until four years from now when I register it as an antique. So my question is, what are my options for an aftermarket exhaust system that will still pass emissions? Do they sell pipes that go from the headers to the factory cat before the crossmember? Something like that would be nice for now, I'd probably modify it four years from now anyway but at least the headers would be in. A complete header back dual exhaust system with a left and right exit behind the rear wheels would be awesome, but I haven't seen many. From looking at the room under the truck for the exhaust I can imagine the routing would be difficult and options would be limited. The truck is a long bed 4x4 302 EFI, automatic overdrive, extended cab 1989 F150. I'm also thinking this might be more trouble than it's worth and I should just wait another four years so I can do whatever I want to it. I had to cut my factory exhaust to clear the oil pan when I took it out, but I could weld it back... The truck has a stock 2 1/4 inch single exhaust system with manifolds and two catalytic converters.
