Customer of mine has a 2005 F-350 extra cab short bed FX-4 V-10 with 23k miles on it that he wants to sell me (trade) towards work on his house. Nicely optioned silver on grey cloth interior that looks brand new. Truck has a plow on it and other than that was only used to run his lawn tractor back and forth to the dealer, haul the annual Christmas tree and for dump runs. has minor rust on the rocker pinch welds and bottom of doors from sitting. Customer is a corporate pilot and never used it - looking to upgrade to a new 2011.
I've got a 2000 F-350 crew cab, long bed 7.3 with 200k miles on it that I love, but know it can't go forever.
He wants 19k for it - good deal? and what should I be looking at for issues? Exhaust studs? Plugs?
i wouldn't take it, my truck is a crew cab and its the only kind i will ever get. some of my friends have extended and supercabs and it sucks riding with them, plus mine is a v10 and dont get me wrong i love it but it sucks down gas, but i would just stick with the 7.3 for now and try to find another.
I don't think it sounds too bad for my area. Low mileage trucks always bring a premium around here. For me, I want a crewcab but i have kids. If your happy with the truck try to talk him down a couple grand. Check blue book for a trade-in value if that's what he's thinking of doing.
What is the trade is it the truck for a certain number of hours or is it the truck for a whole job? If it is for a specific job you might come out ahead or you might get screwed. Are you going to be buying the supplies and supplying labor as part of the trade?
Either way if you did it I would have an agreement written up and notarized with both of you signing it.
I have gotten screwed on this type of deal in the past so I would go as far as making him put the truck in escrow to you pending completion of the work.
Or have him let you put a lien on the truck for total value.
Sorry that is just the world we live in a handshake is not what it use to be and people who have been great customers in the past are not always what they seem.
Is the ride that much different between the supercab and the Crew? I have to tell you, I am a little bit tired (after 10 years) of having to navigate this truck around in parking lots etc., but I do love the ride.
I'm not concerned about getting screwed, there would be a contract, and it would be spelled out what materials/labor get delivered, and from how it is looking I would also be getting cash out of the deal as well.
Should I value the truck less? What would be the right number? It really does look like a brand new truck and includes the plow - not that I really want it, but I could use it.

I think the 'No' for us is losing the crew cab... not the deal..
I don't think the ride is any different.. just the room you lose..
I would love to have the newer 2005 style, the V10 is awesome and in demand (if you are into gassers) and 23K miles is very low. I would, of course, have to see how bad the "rust" is and check out the condition of the rest of the truck. Call me crazy.
I like the supercab short bed just for the <S>better</S> less terrible maneuverability in parking lots etc...especially if you don't haul passengers around a lot.
$19k is a bit high, and rust scares me... it is like cancer, once it takes hold it is hard to stop... i would try to talk him down a few $k... never take the first offer.
I would be worried buying an 05 with such low miles. It is hard on an engine to just sit around and not be run. That truck was run, on average, only 4500 miles a year. You may find that down the road you will be replacing a lot of soft parts.
