Engine backfires through carb and wont start

I have just reinstalled my distributor after some engine work. All the engine will do when i try to crank it is pop and huff through the carb. Is the dizzy 180 degrees off? I have the engine at what I believe is TDC.

I would try moving the distributor 180. Make sure at TDC the rotor is pointing to #1

Yep sounds like your 180 out. It's trying to fire on the intake stroke.

Problem solved. One hundred and eighty degrees around and down the road I went. Thanks a ton fellas.
