85 F150 4.9 Fires but wont idle or stay running
This truck is becoming quite the headache to me. I tore apart the carb and Went through everything, surprisingly for sitting for 21 years the carb wasnt in bad shape at all, Neither the intake to my surprise. Before cleaning the carb the engine would fire, but immidiately die, and was blowing smoke out the top of the carb to show that it was flooded. Pulled the carb apart and cleaned everything, everything is working exactly as it should, nothing was blocked up or not working correctly, Yet it still will only fire, Doesn't matter foot position on gas or anything of the sorts.. We have been jump starting it because the battery in it is bad, not sure that this could have anything to do with it or not? Kinda doubtful on such an older system, but I do know that these feed back carb set ups are a pain. Any suggestions?

I don't have a wiring diagram handy, but on the driver side there is a set of wires coming out of the firewall .
One of them branches off right around the top of the fender well it splits into a Y where it splits one wire goes to the coil is a resistor wire believe it's pink I would start at the coil and work my way back up from there .

No such luck on that pink wire, I have a red w/blue stripe. That's what powers my coil, I'll snap some pictures of the wiring harness, it's a rats nest, just trying to get it to run. Pain in the ****. What would cause it to cut out when you let off the key? I'm going to need to test and see if it loses spark when I do, that would limit my problems down some.

The reason it dies when you let off the switch is because the coil is not getting any more electricity when you turn it to start he gets 12 Volts when the key is in the run position to get like 7 Volts.
As a temporary measure just to get it to run you can get a ceramic resistor they came on all the old cars like a 55 Chevy or Dodge in the 70s.
mounted under the hood somewhere on metal run a wire from the battery + to the resistor then to the coil+ post or splice in.
This will get your running...
You could even throw in a toggle switch.
Good luck
