I have a 2000 Explorer 4.0 SOHC V-6. While coming home with boat in tow near home I turn on my road and engine shuts off. After restarting engine it stumbles and dies when I try to accelerate 3 times. 4th try I ease the the pedal and manage to get home. Check engine is lit. Running so bad barely get boat backed in. Liquid dripping out of tailpipe but does not have a strong fuel odor. I drive it the next day to have diagnotics scanned it runs fine but notice it does not want to shift into o/d. 13 faults on scan show up. Po 743,750,755,760,765,135,141,155,161. P1 409,747 and Po715. When I first step on the pedal I do hear what sounds like a vacuum leak. I heard gas ping on last drive to scan and back. I would like to know if a vacuum leak if big enough would cause this many errors before I look into IAC,MAF and PCM etc. Many thanks ahead.
This whole ordeal started when I locked my keys in so a friend could use keypad to back in my trailer. Locks would not respond to code. Put in a random code to clear and locks opened? except drivers door. Put key in ignition....nothing... put in neutral..same. Friend gave me a jump..nothing(Battery 1 yr. old) Took off cables and tapped on starter..nothing. Checked all fuses related all ok. Tried again and it started. Cleaned both terminal posts and cables (they were clean but did anyway) Locks worked fine?
Any chance your Explorer came from an area prone to flooding? Sounds like you have some interesting electrical gremlins. If this were a Ford Taurus I'd suggest you consider replacing the Transmission Range Sensor (TRS) as that part has been known to cause some pretty interesting electrical gremlins in the Taurus. I haven't heard about similar issues with the Explorer though.
I am going to look for vacuum leaks and clean the MAF today. I hope I find the famous elbow crack these 4.0's have and not the -0-ring issues under the manifold and or oil/vacuum seperator some people experience. Thank you for your time....clean throttle body while i'm at it.
