2010 Take Off ????

When I start my 2010 F250 with 5.4L and 5 sp auto it seems to take off funny, it's not in cold weather either, yesterday it was 88 degrees when I fired it up. I let it idle for 15 seconds or so and then took off, the way it acted I would have sworn it was in 4 low, it acts like there is a huge gear reduction happening for the first 1/2 to 3/4 of a mile then it acts normal. Does everyone's 5.4L w/ 5 sp do this?

Interesting, I had never heard of allowing a truck to warm up for over 5 minutes in 80+ degree weather. I generally start it, wait for the idle to kick down and I take off. I guess it could need a warm up period even in hot temps.

no, no warmup required. Do the obvious check your trans fluid and see where that stands. Both hot and cold levels.

I have done that and the fluid level is good. I also see how handy the front step bumper is, that dipstick is a ways up there

So it is just a feeling of slow take off or do you give it normal throttle and it just does not respond?

The engine races up, the take off is slow if I mash the pedal it does respond but the rpms for the speed is way high...it acts just like when you put the truck in 4-lo and get the massive gear reduction.

that has got to be a programming issue. That is all I can think of. the PCM talks to the TCM It is all electronic nowadays.

I would take it in and have them run a dianostic on it. With no codes all I suppose you can request will be that they run the dianostics and reflash it.

I can't see how programming could cut new gears to change the ratios and make the engine rev more. But I've been wrong before....

I recommend checking the ATF level after the truck has sat at least overnight, and BEFORE starting the engine. If it is really overfilled then there is a problem with the torque converter draining into the pan.

There is a check valve that is supposed to prevent that. If the check valve doesn't work the converter will be half empty when the truck is started. For a little while it will act like a very high stall converter. A high stall converter allows the engine to run much faster before moving the truck. After it runs for a minute or two the converter refills and works normally.

Sounds like a plan I'll check the level again cold and if it's OK, I'll talk to the dealer on Monday I just wanted to see if it was just the nature of the beast or a potential problem.

Funny like a clown?

My 5.4L and 5 speed automatic (5R110W) does not do this when cold. When was the fluid last changed?

You have a x/mission problem like this with less than 600 miles on the truck and haven't checked back with the dealership yet. What is the problem?

I wasn't positive they weren't all doing it, I didn't want to go to the dealer about it if everybody's truck was doing this. I'll talk to them on Monday, I need to talk to them about the muffler already so I'll bring it all up at once, the tail pipe off the muffler is split for the last 6" or so of pipe.

Hello FTE Members:

My rig is a 2009 F350 SuperDuty V8 with the torshift tranny 5 speed auto. No matter what temperature, or how long I warm her up, I notice that she does not shift quickly into the next gear as I am driving only for the first 1/4 mile, kinda like the electronic overdrive system or transmission is making sure the truck is moving and the fluid is equally warmed up in the transmision. My fluids levels both hot and cold are right were they belong.

It might be something in the programming that helps the tranny fluid to warm up. Anyother time except that initial start up in the morning , the transmission runs smoothly.

Basically I leave my driveway slowly, slowly giving her gas and by the first 1/4 mile she immediaetly opens up.

My fathers 2009 v-10 SuperDuty does the same exact thing, It will hold back the next gear untill the truck's tranmission is warmed. Even if you press harder on the accelerator pedal. You can confirm this if you watch the transmission temp gauge, after the transmission gets up to standard operating temperature, the holdback goes away. I guess by staying in a lower gear with higher RPM's the tranny warms up quicker.

Ford claims on the website their newer vehicles do not require long warmups or any warm up at all, unless extreme cold weather.

Call me old school, I still wait for the engine temp needle to move a litle before I go. Hope this helps a little ; that your truck is not defective.

Still have it checked out to make sure it is not something different on your model, as you did say it was a 2010.
