I have a 99 EB with the signal mirrors. Over time the reflective coating came off...I finally had to replace them last fall at 300.00 each! Ford claimed no one else reported an issue with these mirrors and the warranty was long gone so I had to cover the cost.
Have any of you experienced this problem or heard of someone who did? If so, what solutions did you come up with?
Thanks for your help.
I TOO had the same problem with my 97 signal mirriors. I called muth mirrior who made them for ford, they knew about the problem and sent me 2 new ones at no charge! I did this about 10 months ago. all you have to do is give them a call. I do not have the# any more but if you search the site it is posted. good luck.

Ditto me -- free mirrors straight from Muth. I got that advice from this great board, and I'm happy to pass it on! The Muth people are really nice, and even sent a pre-paid label for returning the old ones. The installation is really easy, too.
I called a Ford customer hotline Detroit before replacing my mirrors and they hadn't heard any complaints. Neither had my dealer. Why didn't either of them know about this free offer? Seems strange.
Yep. I had the same problem. The Expi was under warranty so Ford replaced them for me. I too have heard of Muth replacing the mirrors for free also. Nice. Jake.
I called Muth Mirrors a fews days back (January 30,2003) to get my 98 expy signal mirrors replaced due to the defective backing and was told by Chris, Muth will no longer be honoring the warranty and I will need to pay $300 for the mirrors.
I suppose at some point they have to draw the line. Too bad it had to be you.
My dealer claimed not to know anything about the problem either. Id be willing to bet they they were gona charge me for the mirror and have muth send them for free. Thats how much i trust the local dealers.

PS. have you checked the online auctions? They could be on there.
Muth WILL honor the warranty. They admit that some of the mirrors are defective, but will only cover them for the 3/36k Ford warranty. Just say you drive an '01/'02 Exp. and they will honor it. I know this may be a little shady, but if they admit there is a defect, does it really matter if the mirror is a year or two older ? They shouldn't fade that fast anyway.............
I agree with it being shady but I also agree with the fact that they discolor prematurely. This being said, the dealer needs to make good reguardless. I drove mine off of the lot, (brand spankin' new), with the mirrors discolored and a date set to bring the truck back for replacement. Jake.
