tempature guage not working

tempature guage not working
earlier today my guage was working. i changed my coolant temp sensor and now the guage does not work. when i turn the ignition on, the needle moves barely noticeable unless you are looking at it close. i drove around town in 90 degree weather for 10 minutes. it did not move.
i disconnected the battery, made sure the sensor was properly plugged in.
am i missing anything else? should i re-install the older one again, or is there a specific fues i can look at?
also, is it safe to drive?
