I have used diesel kleen since I had my PS and continued to use it in this truck, now before I filled my tank to full last I put in a quart of ATF that I had left over friends told me it helps lubricate the IP and injectors better than Diesel Kleen so I figured why the heck not I'll try it, I don't think it will hurt anything, do you guys think it is better than diesel kleen?
I would not say it's better, it is cheaper, however if you have to worry about getting busted for having the color red in your tanks it is not a wise idea. It doesn't take much to see it.
The only change will be if you get checked for off road fuel in your tanks.
Then a lot of your moiney will change from your pocket to the states pocket.
Fine here, 5000 dollars for the first offense, that varies from state to state.
As far as better than Diesel Kleen, not in my book on the cleaning or lubrication issues.
ATF was the cleaner of choice back in the 70's and 80's.
But there were not many fuel system cleaners on the market back then, and they were about the same cost as they are today.
But you have to consider 1970 dollars, fuel was usually under 50 cents per gallon in most states, so 5 dollars for a quart of diesel conditioner was outragous.

That's true, however ATF is not the same as offroad diesel dye - if you run offroad diesel there's no getting out of that ticket, but with ATF a chem strip will clearly show that it's not offroad fuel in your tanks... Or at least that's what I've been told by a DOT-trained statie, but even so whenever I run ATF in my tanks I also put in some WMO, should I ever get dipped that fuel will be anything but red in color.
That said I only put ATF and WMO cause I have it, with good fuel additives like Howe's out there there ain't much point in messing with the ATF tho.
I dunno if it's better, but that's what I use whenever I remember to grab a bottle or two. It's a lubricant and also anti-gel, and prices ain't outrageous either.
I started running that non stop since forking out for the pump rebuild. I single $10 bottle typically lasts me more than a month so I figure its worth the cost considering the fuel economy I am able to hold lately.
There is another brand that is supposed to super good, it also has some property that bonds to or breaks down water allowing it to pass through without trouble, I know it's made in new york, but for the life of me I can no longer find it.
I don'y like the smell of burning atf. I use tcw-3 two stroke mixed with Howes. Half a jug of Howes and half a gallon of two stroke in a hundred gallons of diesel. I run this in my John Deere diesels with Roosamaster/Stanadyne pumps as well. Its a lovely shade of aquamarine.
If you were to go this route, make sure that the two-stroke is designated tcw-3 or better for no ash content. I think that the two-stroke supplies good lube but I use the Howes as well for it's anti-gelling properties and also as it is supposed to help with any water that ends up in your tanks.

Anyone using Marvel Mystery Oil in either their fuel or oil here in Dieselville? Pros? Cons? I used to work for an old farmer that swore by the stuff.... any merit?
