A friend was asking me about a 1965 F-260. Never heard of it. Claims the truck is a stake truck on a 4 x 4 chassis. What is the difference between an F-250 and F-260? Thanks
Ah yes, the f-260. Its a small single engine airplane, not a truck... Its not 4 wheel drive, its wheels spin freely and they roll as the propeller pulls the plane forward. I wouldn't take it on anything other than paved runways i i were you.
edit- after a bit more research it seems there is such a thing as an f-260 truck, but i dont know much about it.
The VIN will read F11 or F26 for factory 4WD trucks...there are a few different variable F26 and F11 model trucks...like F261, etc..typically differentiated by their GVW rating.

F260 is the MODEL code as listed on the Warranty Plate. It decodes to F250 4WD w/a GVWR of 6,800 lbs.
The SERIES code is the first 3 digits of the VIN. In this case, it would be F26 = F250 4WD.
1965: The original fender emblems would have FORD F250 at the top in block letters, the red plastic inserts have silver lettering stating: FOUR WHEEL DRIVE.
F250 2WD/4WD: Prior to 1972, there is no way by the SERIES code, or the MODEL code to determine if the truck is a Cab & Chassis, has a Platform (Flat Bed), or Platform & Rack (Stake Bed), or is a Flareside or Styleside pickup.

Bill,
I haven't seen the truck,l but my friend tells me it is a stake truck configuration with 4 wd, and the truck has F-260 Emblems on it. Is that consistent? I believe he said the F-260 was painted on the truck. He said the truck was originally his brothers and was purchased new.

Ford did offer factory installed Stake (and Flat) Beds with 2WD or 4WD, but when it comes to an F260, there is no such thing...except for the MODEL code of F260 on the Warranty Plate.
I believe he said the F-260 was painted on the truck. Ford never did any such thing.
He said the truck was originally his brothers and was purchased new. In March 1965, I bought a '65 F100 brand new. Can I recall how it was originally configured? Absolutely, cuz I owned it till November 2009.
Just because the fellow's brother bought it new, doesn't mean he knows its entire history, or what might have been altered since then.
Ford never offered a F260 emblem for any Ford truck sold in the US or Canada, because Ford never offered an F260.
Ford never painted on any emblems on trucks...or passenger cars.
Ford built some odd trucks for the Latin American market, and while I've never seen one, it's possible that an F260 existed...there.
But trucks sold in Latin America were not sold in the US/Canada.
My guess is, that at some point...someone noticed the MODEL code of F260 on the Warranty Plate, had no clue what that refered to, then decided to paint on emblems so stating.
We purchased a 1966 Ford 4 wheel drive truck from Southern Pacific Rail road surplus in 1970 it is a warranty code F-260 , it came with a factory flat bed(Ford script across the back) It has a factory brush gard over the complete grill, a 352 V-8, N.P. 435 4 speed and 205 transfer case the rear axle is a dana 60 with a traction lock unit and a 13 leaf spring pack, the front is a dana 44-35 the 35 denotes it's rating 3500 lb. the carrier is standard 44 however every thing else is huge, much larger than a standard 44. there is no hood badges other then the V-8 emblem on the center front of the hood. It does have indash mounted oil pressure and amp gauges as the temp and fuel are in the speedo cluster all of the above is factory, we still own this truck.

VIN will begin with series code of F26 = F250 4WD / MODEL code stamped on Warranty Plate: F260 = F250 4WD w/a 6,800 lbs. GVWR
1956 was the last year for Ford script flat/stake beds. 1957/79 flat/stake beds have FORD block letters.
