'02 Explorer rear heat doesn't work

Hello all. New to these forums and need some help.

We just got a 2002 Explorer XLT for our daughters to share. Very well cared for but the rear heat does not work.

Rear A/C works great, but no heat. Front heat works great.

Any ideas?

That sounds like the blend door actuator is broke or the blend door is stuck on the rear climate control unit. Usually the actuator is broken. Try searching for 'rear actuator' or 'aux actuator' for posts on this. This is definately DIY for just about anyone - not near as hard as the front units.

rrgone, thanks for the reply.

This was what I was thinking, or possibly a leak in a vacuum hose? Aren't the actuators run by vacuum?

There is none of the typically reported 'clicking' noise from stripped/broken gears. It just doesn't get warm.

We bought this vehicle from a Ford dealer and are waiting on a new instrument cluster as the odometer display only works intermittently.

When they call to let us know that part is in, I will discuss this rear heating issue.

Since we just took possession on Monday, they should take care of this.

The actuators have a small electric motor, not vacuum. Sometimes that motor just quits and you don't get the constant clicking noise. Let us know how your dealer takes care of you and what the problem was.

Thanks for all the insight. It paid off.

Since we purchased this Explorer "As Is" from the dealer, they were not very willing to work with us.

They did install a new instrument cluster to fix the issue of the digital odo readout being faded and not displying most of the time.

However they wanted $335.58 to replace the Rear Blend Door for the rear heater.

The part was $73.08 retail, so $262.50 in labor. I saw their quote of 3.5hrs labor at $75/hr.

I bought the part and replaced it myself this morning.

Just for grins, I set a stop watch when I began. Mind you, everything was together just as if I had taken it to the dealer.

A mere 40:27 (40 minutes, 27 seconds) later I turned the stop watch off when I had everything put back together.

Bunch of parasites.

No, I am not a trained mechanic, other than Army AIT in 1980 as a Track Vehicle Mechanic. But I converted over to a tank gunner, so no real 'experience' beyond growing up working on trucks and tractors on the farm.

Everything works as it should now.

I will NEVER return to that dealership for service.

Thanks for the assist guys.
