Ive pulled some that looked like that or worse, they were all caused by algae though, so if yours is simply that dirty from use and no algae, and was still running, Im impressed.
how long has it been sense you last changed that thing! i haven't seen a filter that bad sense one of my boss's old farm trucks that they ran on nothing but unfiltered used motor oil. of course they asked me to change the fuel filter without telling me what they had been running it on just to screw with me...lol
i just bought the truck a few weeks ago....I know that filter is awful, but think it did any damage being like that? the kid i bought it from was a meat head....And this is the only thing i didnt check when i bought it.
Just drain the fuel bowl and wash it out real good with brake or carb cleaner cleaner, put in a new filter clean the fpr screen I have good a REALLY good hunch its dirty too. and maybe even take apart your FPR and clean it out too, then start doseing it very heavily with injector cleaner for the next 3 or 4 fill ups of both tanks to clean anything else out of both of them as well as the lines and injectors, yhen youll probably need to replace the filter again in about 2weeks to a month just to be sure your running clean again. The damage inflicted if any will be on your injectors and by now id say its already done whatever it was going to do, so if anything you should already know by the way it runs, and all that'll happen now will be that it runs better.

The fuel bowl was spotless....Kinda weird. Whats should i run for cleaner Techron? Or however you spell it? Its runs great, just surges sometimes at idle.

PowerService is quite popular. Stanadyne is another good one.
With the outside of the filter looking like that, I wonder what the inside looks like.

I think like you, that its caused by algae, so you need an algaecide (sp ?)
because looks like this one, caused by algae. Other remote possibility could be bad o-rings??
