My transmission is leaving me. Reverse is completely gone. It will engage but wont move at all. The forward gears work but do not shift on their own. I have to do it maunually with the column shifter. Not much of a transmission guy, so what do you guys think has gone wrong with it?
It doesn't matter really. It's going to have to be torn down and rebuilt. It's not like you can take it apart and do surgery, and then put it back together. It's such a pain to take out and take apart, you want everything redone before it's put back in.
There is a rebuilt one on E-bay for $400. That's a little more than a kit to rebuild it costs. It's in New York. I was thinkin' of buying it until I figured in shipping. Dunno where you live, but if you're east, you might consider it.
Im not planning to rebuild the tranny on my own because I know nothing about them. I just wanted to get an idea whats wrong to know if it was easily fixable or something that will cost me big money. I may just end up and buy a full TCI unit that can withstand like 400 hp and has a nice warranty.
i found this:
"I would remove the valve body and wash it out thoroughly. Mine had no reverse and all it was , was a sticky valve."
that sure is easy.have you ever taken out a VB before? sure worth checking out before doing all the work and paying $ for a new trans.ya never know.
anyway.drop the pan.the VB will be that first big section with all kinds of bolts.unbolt it and flush it out.
save all your old tranny fluid so you can just put it back in for the test.
dont even mess with filter-well look at it while your in there.a plugged one wont do you any good, nor bother with a new pan gasket.just toss it back together and see what happens.if your lucky and its not the reverse clutches then cool, buy a filter/pan gasket, and new fluid and keep going.
if you find a new trans is in order,an OD sure is nice for fuel economy.the e40d will bolt right in.you would need the brain and wiring hardness/alter cross member or e40d's.
