It's not that I dont' believe you, it's I keep getting more then one answer to the same question.
Like I said, call your local Ford service and they will tell you what I told you. Thats how I found out. I thought they made a mistake when I bought the fluid for both differentials and they only had 75w-140 in the box. I called them from home and started to get on their azz. Thats when they told me about ford changing this.
Ford now recommends 75w-140 in the front differential. I used Motorcraft synthetic in both front and rear. The transfer case takes the same fluid as the transmission.
How many quarts should I pick up total if I am going to change the fluid in both axles? Gonna change out my rear axle bearings and seals this week or next. Should I just get a couple of quarts of Mercon V for the transfer case?
actually they may tell him what two different service managers told me. they said ford engineered them with the intention to never change the gear oil. "thats why they don't have a drain plug". needless to say I ignored them both, but I serviced my front with the 75w90 since I already had it, and couldn't find the receipt to return. I wasn't going to waste perfectly good Mobil1 gear oil.

I would get 7 qts of fluid for both and if you have LS, you need to get the Friction Modifier. Mercon V is what you need in the transfer case.

I would also use the fluid you have if I already bought it.
I just finished my rear differential service last night / this morning. Followed Guzzles instructions and everything went very well. The only other thing I would add is I removed the breather fitting from the axle and made sure it and the breather hose was clear. I didn't want to push any dirt into the axle if there was anything in the fitting, that's why I unscrewed it from the axle before I checked it with a small screwdriver. Be sure nothing get into thee hole when you take it off. I let the RTV setup overnight, I just feel better knowing it is well into the curing process before I add gear oil. I used Royal Purple and it has the friction modifier already added. Make sure you use enough RTV! whoever serviced the diff before I got the truck didn't use enough and rust developed between the cover and differential and th started leaking where the RTV was not covering the entire cover lip.

The front differential is next. Maybe tonight.
Good Luck,

Good job JP. The breather plug and hose thingy is a very good tip. Thanks.
I didn't remove and clean mine but I think I will this weekend. Could it be done without any other servicing to the rear diff? I mean, could I do it with the cover and fluid it place, without any dirt falling into the diff?
You can check the fitting and and hose without doing any other service to the differential. Just clean around the fitting and then remove it with a deep well socket or wrench. Might help to wipe around the fitting as best you can with a towel with some oil on it. That will remove any dust and make any particles stick so they don't fall in the hole (excessive I know). To check the hose, simply blow into it and make sure it's mot clogged. if ti is, just replace the hose with some stock vacuum hose from your local auto supply shop. That's about it.
