Nylon teeth on stock big block timing gears too...
When they fall apart it's time to pull the pan and get all that junk out of the oil pump pickup.

I just put a timing light on and snap the throttle open and closed.
If the marks jump around you are seeing evidence of a sloppy timing chain.

Good idea. Do you think if the spout plug was removed, it would demonstrate that condiition more pronouncedly or not?

My truck just has a DSII system but I would thing with the computer removed from the loop there's no chance of it having any influence.
It's only reading the signal from the pickup in the distributor anyhow...

You need to remove the spout to check and set base timing anyhow, no?

As the revs drop back down a slack timing chain will never show a steady decrease of the advance.
Just do yourself a favor and install something like a true roller and you won't have to think about for well over 100k.

How much rotation on the distributor is too much using the rotor to turn it? This one moves about 1/2", i.e. the full width of the "blade" on the tip of the rotor.
Mine only moves slightly, not even 1/16".
