Red face F100 first build -need some help

Hey All,

New to the forum but I have been getting alot of useful information from everyone.

I have a few questions on my 1979 F100 2WD with a 302. It currently has a C6 in it but its dead, so I was thinking of replacing it with a 88-92 AOD. From what I have read this is a good swap plus I can rebuild it later on to handle some serious power, I cant quite afford to do it right now. What should I be looking for when I actually do this swap? Will I need a new flexplate, driveshaft?

I do plan to do a total restoration on this truck, would it be possible to coat the frame with rubber undercoating with the body still on the frame? There is currently a 3 inch body lift on it that I will be taking out after I install the new transmission.

This truck needs alot of work so any tips or pointers for a newbie would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

I would not use rubber undercoat. I think you would soon have rust beyond repair. Go POR15 or the stuff Eastwood sells.

As far as an AOD, there are atleast 2 different lengths. The earlier ones do not require any electronics to shift. The crossmember will not line up and will have to move back a few inches. No big deal.

I am not sure about drive shaft length.

Engine balance changed so you need to run the flex plate that came with your engine or swap the harmonic balancer from a later engine if you swap flexplates.

Thanks for the info. I think I might just keep the C6 tranny and and plan the tranny swap at a later time when I have the extra cash.

You wouldn't happen to know the difference between a small bearing and a large bearing 9" axle would be? And what bearing are they referring to?

Thanks

Small and large bearing refers to the axle bearing size.

why would you put an E4od (one of Fords worst trannys) in place of a C-6 (the best tranny made)... E4od is totally electric controlled..not sure how that would work in the old truck... just my opinion

I was gonna replace the C6 with an AOD which was built from 1980 to 1992, these are not electronically controlled. The E40D replaced the AOD with some improvements in the hardware but the major difference is it is elecronticall controlled. And I do agree that the E40D was the worst tranny Ford ever built.

Basically, what I was trying to accomplish by swapping in a 4spd auto was to improve drivability and MPG's. I plan on building this truck into a cruiser and/or weekend warrior. Would it be cheaper just to get the C6 rebuilt for now? Does anyone know how much that would cost?

Thanks for the help everyone!!!

The E4OD does have a use!

A wide ratio gearset for a C6
