Hey guys. Question: I run a 97 Explorer, XLT trim. The standard wheel size on this one is a 15 x 7 (at least I'm pretty sure of it, as I seem to recall that being on the backside of one of my stock rims). I am batting around buying new rims for it as the stockers are peeling, and I'm curious if anyone has had the experience of putting a slightly wider rim on and if they've had any issues with rubbing. I'd like to have the flexibility in choice of sizes (at least a little) when making my selection. I like the idea of going a little wider and am NOT looking to go taller right now...maybe in the future when I do more modifications.
I have a 98 Explorer which came with 16 x 7 wheels with 255 70 16 tyres. After the Firestone Wilderness fiasco I put some 16 x 8 wheels and 265 70 16 tyres on. These wheels have a zero offset compaed to the stock 1" offset so the track is increased by 2". I did this swap in 2005. No problems at all. Very close in front arch on turns but no rubbing. No problems with wheel bearings. No problems with speedo or mileage. Truck feels more stable on bends. Hope this helps.
Thanks for the feedback, it's helpful. I'm not planning on 16's right now since mine came with 15's... but down the road I am entertaining some other mods like a mild lift among others...and taller wheels will come into play.
