Ive brought this up before, but my 1963 f100 4x4 needs a new locking hub. The book has it listed as a 2414 axle, which is a dana 44. I'm having a hell of a time finding hubs for it. I keep finding hubs that have 6 bolt holes in them, mine has 8. I've searched high and low and can't find anything. Does anyone know where i can get some with 8 bolt holes?
What do you mean 6 vs 8?
You need to take tha actual hub out and replace it. That **** and coverplate mount to a locking assembly inside the spindle that actualy engages the axle. The center part is held in with snap rings.
Who cares if the original has more or less bolts. If you want this to work you will have to use the new parts or go junkyarding.
It is original because the 1961-1963 shop manual has an illustration of the exact hub with the same pattern. I need a clutch assembly, that is the part that has 8 bolts on it. The picture in the bok has it listed as E1273-A. Im not sure if thats a part number or if its the picture number or what, but i googled it and didn't find anything.
I called warn and they also thought I was crazy, but I'm speaking the truth, its a factory original Warn locking hub with 8 bolts. In an internal hub and its broken.
Now for the good news, basically the guy at Warn (who wasn't very enthusiastic about his job) said that I can just buy a 6 lug assembly because the hub screws into itself basically and i would just need to replace the internal part of it too.
So my new question is, if i buy a new locking hub will its include the internal parts too or just the clutch assembly?
buying a new hub kit will give you everything. I just installed a mile marker set a few weeks ago. if you can break it down to where the stub shaft is sitting inside the hub, thats all you need. the kit will replace everything else.
Now my question to you is, is the stub shaft assembly loose in the knuckle? mine will go back and forth about a 1/2 inch and im not sure if that is a good thing or not. mine does it on both sides.
I want to say that yes, there is a little wiggle room. In not sure if its 1/2'' though. I haven't played with it much. After i take the snap ring off then what do it do? how do i pull it out?

You are correct, I was confused by your 8 bolt scenario, because some hubs have 6 bolts, but in a different location.
I didn't realize the 8 bolts you were refering to fit into this: COTT1093A .. Free Running Hub Clutch Body / Obsolete-No Ford Dealer or obsolete parts vendor has any.
This is just the body only, none of the parts behind it are included.
You need to replace the entire locking mechanism. Pull out all the old parts a drop in new mile marker or warn hubs for the dana 44 five lug. Bill was giving you genuine ford parts in his post, He does not delve in to the aftermarket.
Buy an aftermarket. It has the "clutch" and the hub bezel.
I dont know on a straight axle truck but all the twin I beam axles I have seen do move in and out a ways. I think a small amount of play is needed for steering.
