It depends on what the tech hears really. I will be the first to step and say this test has less then the best exact science behind it. Ford wants us to try and hear something hissing in an engine that is sealed up. Now Im sure you have been in a autoshop before. There are days when so much is going on you cant hear yourself think.
so basicly the test works but sucks and it has it flaws, sometime you hear it sometimes you have to dig around for awhile to find it.
sometimes you have 3-4 things leaking.

always happy to help.
I noticed that you deleted your EGR which has me thinking should I delete mine or not. My EGR cooler failed last fall and they replaced it (under warranty) so I'm wondering if I should have them delete mine if they have to tear down the engine to replace the HPOP. What's your opinion on that?
BTW, that is my last question for the night....big day tomorrow so I'm crashing in a few!
Latest update - I talked with the service adviser and he told me that its the worse case scenario.....the HPOP has to be replaced. Since the truck is out of warranty (05 w/104k miles) it will not be covered by Ford, but the silver lining is that the adviser talked with Ford and their going to drop the cost of repairs by one-third of the price that he quoted (which already had some nice discounts on parts and some on labor).
The only reason I got any type of help from Ford was because the adviser told them that I've been very diligent about changing the oil every 5k to 7k with Rotella synthetic, but what hurt me was the fact that didn't have all of the documentation to verify. I did offer to dig-up my credit card receipts to show all of my oil purchases, but he said that it wouldn't help reduce the bill any more than what Ford had already discounted. I personally feel that the dealership is working to help me out but I'm still wondering if Ford should be a little more considerate.
Mike my awnser here will not be popular. Im sorry to say at some point ford has to say your out of warranty. Also the fact you are buying rotella wich is not a ford procduct you were not supporting ford in part sales. I find a 25% discount to be very fair. sorry.
I do hope all goes well with the repairs and it gets fixed right.
There is an old saying that applies to my situation....don't look a gift horse in the mouth. With that being said, I know that the local dealership is working to help me but I was curious if anyone else had a major repair that was within 4k or 5k past the 100k warranty.
The tech will be finished working on the truck tomorrow but he wanted some time to drive it to insure that the truck is 100% before I pick it up, so I will see the truck (and the bill) Monday. I'm not too worried about the truck (other than the bill) being repaired correctly because the service department has always done good work.
I can awnser that, we do it all the time. most of it is help from ford fleet and they are companys that have a few 100 units and they get it for free many times.
we have customers every now and again that get partital help its very rare to see ford buy 100% in. 25%,33%,and 50% is common when it happens

Good to know....my dealership has been good to me and what happened today just reaffirms it.

Comments?????
GT350Mike,
My 05 had the same problem, we were on the road coming back from Arizona last year. We got to Jackson, MS. and stopped for fuel, and the truck would not start. Towed to a Ford Truck Repair facility and found the HPOP was bad. After 3 days the truck was fixed and warranty covered the bill except for the deductible on my extended warranty. I asked how much the bill would have been and was told about $2800.
Good luck with the repairs.

The estimate was about $2600 but the dealership was able to get my bill down to around $1500 to $1600.....It's not the news that I was hoping for, but I consider myself lucky because the truck was out of warranty and Ford wasn't legally obligated to do anything.
One thing that made me stop and think was their comment about the oil that I used. I used Rotella synthetic after the first 10k miles because it was highly recommended by most Powerstroke owners, but the adviser said that they have seen problems with that oil. Don't want to start a flaming war on what oil is better or worse so I'm gonna stop now.
I won't use it either and I know a bunch of the high horsepower guys that wouldn't use it in a 6.0 either. It's great for a 7.3 but NOT for a 6.0 IMHO. pours more like water than oil to me.

Are you talking about Rotella synthetic or just synthetic???
Just got the truck back today and the total bill was a hair under $1500 to replace the high pressure oil pump. Overall I'm pretty lucky that the bill was not more than what I paid since my truck was about 4k over the 100k mile and the dealership worked with Ford to reduce my bill. To show my appreciation, I stopped by Lowes this afternoon and bought two gift cards (one for the service adviser and one for the tech) that I'm going to mail to the GM and let him present to them. I learned a simple philosophy a long time ago in the Army to take care of the people that take care of me.....hopefully I won't see them for a long time for anything other than routine maitenance!
