78-79 Bronco driveshaft questions...

I am installing a 6" suspension lift on my 79 Bronco trail rig project. The CVs on both front and rear drive shafts are pretty much wiped out. I am going to have to have them rebuilt, I might as well have everything done at the same time. My question is for any of you who are running the same or similar setup, did any of you have to have longer driveshafts made? If so how much longer?

All you have to do is measure from the center of each opposing yoke and whoever makes your driveshaft will adjust the length accordingly.

Right, I knew that... I was just hoping to save myself a little extra work that's all. I read somewhere that on these trucks (more specifically Broncos)with a 6" lift lengthening the driveshafts may be necessary. I didn't have to lengthen the shafts on my 84 pickup when I lifted it 6", but there is a bit of a difference in wheelbase between a RC LB pickup and a Bronco. I guess I might as well bust out the ol tape measure and crawl under there tomorrow. Thanx Ronin!

I didn't have to with a 4" lift. I would just go ahead and put the lift on and then slip the shaft in there to see where it lands, but I think you may have to get an inch or three added.

Probably gonna want to rotate diffs up as well with some pinion shims a few degrees as well while your at it. If your going through the trouble of replacing joints in cv it's not a bad idea to make it with a 1 ton 1350 cv at least in the rear. Get a shaft from a newer superduty (most likely a front one if I recall)with a cv that is longer and cut it down to suit is the cheap way to go..

WOW! I didn't expect to log on and find a regular 3 ring circus going on! You guys are crazy! A buddy of mine has a 78 Bronco with a 4" lift and he is running stock length driveshafts, he said they're pretty close to the noncomfort zone so to speak. Sounds like I am going to have to lengthen em up a bit. Thanx for the info.

make sure you get the compression length right. you don't want the slip shaft to bottom out while flexing and punch out the other side of the t-case

you could always weld the slip yoke to the splined end of the driveshaft to keep if from sliding out when wheeling...
