Tips for setting wheel studs?

I'm in the midst of a brake job and bearing repack on my 96 F250 7.3L with Dana 50 Auto hubs. The forums got me this far, as Ive got the hubs out, bearings out, rotor removed from the hub assembly and now I'm attempting to reinstall the new rotor. I have pounded the studs back in through the rotor to the hub, but theres a small amount of play between the two. I've used an air hammer to try and set them further, sledge and nail punch, etc, and they seem as though none of them will set any further.
Is this normal for the connection between the hub and rotor to have slight play. When I say slight play, you cant see a gap between the two, but you can jiggle the rotor a tiny bit .
Just seems like this connection should be tight as can be.
Note: I also tried putting the lug nuts on and tightening them down with all I've got to 'pull' the studs the last little bit, to no avail.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

I had the same issue, used a big punch too and got it tight. Don't want them loose.

I've always been taught to use a nut to press them in.

throw on a washer and a nut with the impact wrench and suck them in.
Thats how I was taught.

Damn, great suggestions and unfortunately I've tried them all to no avail. I'm gonna go get new studs and nuts and see if fresh'uns might be better.

Argh. Finally got it, but now have a new problem. After installing the bearing retainer nut (the one which requires the 2 3/4" socket) there is a "lock ring key" which has to be installed. It has a tab that goes inward towards the bearing into a groove in the retainer nut, then wraps halfway around it like a snap ring. I broke the damn tab off attempting to install it.

Any suggestions? Does the tab really matter?

Check out that thread. We just went through this discussion on it. Yes it matters, its a lock to keep the nut from backing off
