Hi all. i am new to this era of ford trucks, but not to fords in general, and i currently own a 97 with a 4.6 that i am pretty familiar with. there is a chance that i will have the possibility to upgrade trucks this summer and i would love to get an 04 or 05 but i dont know anything about them. are there any problems that i should look out for that are common? i have read about a butyl ??? whatever that is basically would it be a good idea for me to do this upgrade or should i stick with the 97-03 family that i am familiar with? thanks for any and all input as this decision will affect me for probably the next 5 years.
the only real thing that you have to worry about is the spark plugs on the 5.4L V8. They like to get stuck in the heads. So if you are going to buy a higher mileage truck then you should have them changed as a condition of sale. Other than that, these trucks are really good.
I just went from an '02 to '04. Both 5.4L. I got around 13 mpg's with the '02 with 3.55 gears. I get 15 mpg's with the '04 with 3.73 gears. Both trucks are 4x4 supercab FX4's. I am very pleased with the mileage the '04 gets. I can get around 400 miles out of a tank, where before I would only get around 300. The tank on the '04 is only a couple galllon bigger.

that doesnt sound to bad of a switch.... what kind of driving do you do? i live out in the country about 20 minutes from anything and during the summer running summer blend i get between 15 and 16 with my 4.6 with 3.55s. so just a little more than 300 a tank. so it sounds like at the very least i wont loose any mpgs which is good.
I live about 10 miles from town, so when I do drive it, it's usually at least a 10 mile trip of highway involved, unless I take the back way. I drove it home about 150 miles after I bought it a few months ago. I got 15.8 on two lane roads at about 60 mph and slowing down thru small towns on the way home. Haven't had it on the interstate yet, don't know if it will get better or worse running it for a long period over 70 mph.
