hey guys i got a short wheel base ext cab f150 thats got the stepside bed on it. it currently has the chrome bed rails on it but ive never been really big on those. im thinking about either a tonneau cover or a toolbox for mine but i dont know which. a toolbox would be easier and cheaper to find but i think a tonneau would look better. my question is what size toolbox and tonneau would i be looking for? a full size truck toolbox would be too wide so would i look for like a ranger toolbox or tonneau? which would you all put in my truck? tonneau or toolbox?
GOOD LUCK!!!
I've keeped an eye out for a used hard cover since I bought mine in '99. Still don't have one. I know it had one because of the hinges on the bed, and holes where the gas struts had been mounted. I've seen new covers, twice what a normal truck tonneau costs!
I love my Flareside... sometimes!
im not much for the toppers. just wanted to know what size i would look for. whether or not they made them just for the flare sides or if a ranger would work. same thing with the tool boxes
Truxedo will custom make a bed cover in a choice of colors.
I have their Lo-pro QT in dark grey to match my metallic smoke paint. The bed is now water proof even in a car wash! I think its great. I added an electric lock in the tailgate. Now I have a 72 cubic foot trunk!
do you haul anything taller than bed height? are you talking about a hard tonneau or soft roll up style? if you haul anything tall you will hate the hard cover. I have one on my 95 flareside. looks GREAT!! sucks when I have to haul anything taller than the bed though. I vote soft cover or tool box. my truck had the A.R.E hard cover on it when i bought it,i am replacing it as soon as I find a good soft cover.
UAW has some nice chest style tool boxs that sit inside the bed and cant really be seen from ground level in the truck...i have one in my flareside and love it.....if i remember right, your bed is 42 inches wide, and 6 1/2 feet long, heres the box i have, they have a wider one that gives about an inch of clearance on each side as well....but i like the narrower one for laying long stuff in the back......
as you can see in the pic.....i have a million snaps from the previous owners soft top.....i hate those snaps with a
passion...i am drawing up plans for a "soft hard cover" if that makes since to you, that will fit inside the bed and over lap
the edges about 1/2 inch so i can keep my bed rails.....

too bad your not closer, i have a line on 2 of them......
one is the factory ford style with the "trunk lid" at the back, and the other is a leer "no drill installation" style....
i like them both for various reasons, but if i choose one i think i will go with the factory style....
