Reason: got pic
F10= F100 series truck, 2WD
A= 240 c.i. 6 cylinder engine
C= Ontario Truck assembly plant
886161= July 1966 build date
WB= 115= wheelbase in inches
Model= F101= 4200# GVW rating
4= Medium Beige crush Vinyl & Medium BeigeWicker Pattern Vinyl
81= conventional cab= 81A= standard model truck
F= Warner T98A or T18 4 speed transmission
C5= Dana 60.2 Locking rear axle assembly, 4:10 ratio, 3.3M
21= DSO= where original selling dealer ordered the truck from= Atlanta
0770= the unique order number of the truck...it was a special order, not 'bought off the lot'
The truck is too old to have a title, the bill of sale said it was a 65 and I told the people that looked at it at dmv that its a 65 so they put it in as a 65.
There is a vin tag on the firewall that has same number as the one on the door.
Someone along the way took out the dana 60 limited slip because it has a 9 in. under it now and the speedo is way off.
Per the Ford shop manual and Master Parts Catalog, the 'official' VIN location is on the topside surface of the passenger side frame rail about 12" in front of the engine crossmember...about parallel with the alternator as you stand on the side of the truck.
Use a wire brush to clean it off...its around the area that the edge of the fender apron sits over. The VIN has 2 asterisks( * ) on either end of it to make it stand out a bit. The characters are about 1/4" tall.
Theres another location members here have also mentioned it being stamped, that being on topside of the frame rail under the cab.
Production of the 2 different years of trucks was changed over to in August 1966. The final sequential serial number used on a 1966 model year truck is 913999. The first sequential serial number used on a 1966 model year truck is 732,001.
The warranty plate was NEVER attached to the firewall on any F series truck from the factory during the 1961-66 model years. If its there, it was moved there from the rear face of the left side door below the latch which is where the factory attached it originally...note the 2 holes....if your tag isnt there...

This is the tag on firewall that also has vin # its just stamped steel painted black.
I had no doubts the vin# was correct for the truck, it's just that the guy I bought it from thought it was a 65 and there's no title. So, the VIN lookup was really the only way to know otherwise.
Having the DMV change it to 66 is prolly a big hassle and we don't have any type of inspections here so I'm just gonna keep it a 65 on paper. When I got the tag the lady from the dmv office just came out and compared the door vin plate to the one I told her and asked me what color I was gonna paint it.
Thats not the warranty plate...thats whats called a buck tag...Thats what the guys referred to in large part for certain specifics as the truck was assembled. As far as registation stuff goes, it has no legal weight...I have one of those also that I got off of a truck I got some parts from...The warranty number plates will also always be aluminum, vs the steel buck tags which are screwed/bolted to the cab...the warranty plates will always be riveted to the door area I mentioned prior, or to the inside of the glove box door on earlier years..I believe thru the full 63 model year run...I think that was changed to the door area during the early part of the 64 model year run.
The frame is the ultimate decider though...and since it matches the door...all is well.
