There are a couple posts on here about using vintage plates on our trucks so I thought I would tell you our experience. A couple months ago we found a vintage plate the my wife like and was available for use at a car show. We logged on to the AZ DMV and confirmed the availability of the plate number then re-painted the plate to original. Lois took our old plate, new plate and registration to the local DMV office. After a 1 1/2 hour wait it was her turn. Lady told her it was no problem to transfer to the new plate but the state charges $10.00 per year if you provide the plate? Since our registration expires in March of 2017 we would owe for 2015,16 and 17 plus a $15.00 transfer fee, $45.00 total. Lois told her this was fine but since we already had a special plate that was $25.00 per year and we already paid for that should we not get a refund? No state does not do that. So now we pay for a plate we already bought and for the next three years we also pay for a plate we no longer use, one way or another they always get their money. Anyway once she finally got her turn it only took ten minutes to relieve her of her cash and Belle had a new plate. Looks good and Lois is happy.
Original 52 truck plate. Lois like the low number.
Section #3 and #4 mean you can put any matching set of period-correct MAINE plates on your antique car or truck as long as you carry a set of registered modern antique plates in the vehicle. It only costs $15 a year to register the vehicle.
I display a set of 1951 plates on my truck and keep some new plates in the glovebox.
I also keep a printed copy of this statute taped to the new plates in case some uninformed person decides to take issue with the old plates not being in the registration database as active or belonging to that truck.

p.s. holy smokes Mike that truck looks good.

Reason: added plate picture

North Carolina allows the same. Just need to remember to put the registered plates on if you leave the state. Had a friend fall foul of that driving into Tennessee (I think).

That seems like a good system also. I'm glad I don't have to deal with 2 sets of plate though. Now that the old plates are on I'll pay about $10.00 per year for registration and another $10.00 for the plate.
Thanks, we have been having a ball with it. Have already put a couple thousand miles on it since we completed it a few months back.
Found my plate at the Watson Lake car show and swap meet. Took it to the DMV and with no hassle at all they assigned it to the truck and I was out the door.

My experience matched yours... I registered mine for 5 years each time. I called the AZ DMV and spoke to the Special Plates Division to check if the plate numbers were in current use...
Here are the instructions for Missouri: Historic License Plates
They say you can email them to find out if they YOM plate numbers are available to use.
In Missouri you only need one YOM plate. Regular plates you are required to use two.
Of course, now you guys have me looking for plates. I actually found a couple....
So how do you check to see if it is available? You said you logged on the DMV website and checked how?
Go to the bottom of this page and type in the number of your plate. It will tell you instantly if it is available. If it is take your new plate ,old plate and registration to DMV. https://servicearizona.com/webapp/ve...startChoice.do
In Florida the plate year must match the year of the truck and must be prior to 1975. You have to send the plate to Tallahassee along with a letter requesting that the tag be authenticated. The instructions for the content of the letter are on-line or at the tag offices. You must include a fee, mine was $60. They will inspect the plate and approve/disapprove. When I did mine, I was told that the plate had to be original (i.e. not restored), correct color, readable and a number not currently in use. I've heard that they have dropped the requirement about not being restored but I can't verify that.
