muti meter battery test
#2
You got that meter set to DC 10V? DV 50V will get you a more accurate voltage reading instead of pegging the meter.
And you're getting battery voltage at the CASE of the alternator as well as the battery post?.
Voltage regulator is external to the alternator so if the alternator is bad it would be on the diode pack (rectifier) I think. The alternators put out AC 3 phase voltage and the rectifier converts that to DC voltage

re: battery test via multimeter
All: Howdy, first post. Lurked for a while. Joes you tube just begged me for a response. So I joined.
Joe: If you are trying to test your batteries via a multi-meter.
1: Get a digital meter. If you are a novice you are less likely to destroy it and it's easy to read.
2: The best test for a battery is a load test. IE what's the voltage doing at start-up?
The batteries on my truck will commonly dump to 9 or 10 volts at start-up but
but quickly recover to 12.x volts. If you leave the truck running they should
jump back to 13+volts pretty quick.
As others mentioned you are not truly testing a battery when they are both hooked up.
My 2¢
The new guy.

Thx rupejosh, the questions should start REAL soon...
( she's starting hard and found low compression numbers today )
Well I guess joe 350 is an inspiring guy? I decided to try out the youtube thing for myself today. It's pretty slick. Ya'll get to see my first video.
The link below: my version of a battery test. I noticed I didn't mention in my video, that battery is good. A shorted cell would drop to 6 or even lower volts. IIRC a weak battery would fade back up a lot slower ( some one help me here ).

Good Luck!
