on my 400 i just installed a mechanical oil pressure guage and found i am runn about 60 psi at idle is this bad? as i increase rpm it goes up to about 75. i was told this ma be a bad thing and can cause bearing erosion is this true? i am using a standard 10w30 oil. with a lil seafoam added to it for cleanout atm
I would say that is nothing to worry about.A lot of folks that run these engines have complaints about low oil pressure. How many miles on the engine, and what do you know about it's history?
A friend of mine had it built at a engine shop, it has been decked, balanced, and blueprinted, and pistons suposibly it has close to 11 to 1 cr., and a high volume oil pump. I know that is why the oil pressure is high. I am just worried about oil erosion. He drove it to miami from oregon when he moved, then from miami to southern GA. (cairo to be exact) Then let the truck sit for a few years. I just got it running not long ago with a new set of plugs and a new carb. just finished all the wiring about 2 weeks ago, and got it titled. Truck is sound and a good driver it just sucks the gas. He had a performance port on the heads with a new camshaft and crank also plus its .30 over. he said he put about 4g in the engine rebuild and machine work. the machine work was done at a buddies shop real cheap. My wife cant stand driving it cause i put a shift kit in it and it barks tires (had a shop do a little trany work on the side to) when it shifts lol but it runs good!
That sounds like a great build!I built mine to a 408 with 9.5:1 compression.I too used a high volume pump in my build. That is why I was curious about the oil pressure in yours.Mine has about 80psi at cold idle,45psi at hot idle, and runs around 62psi hot and under load.Would not worry about erosion on the bearings.Erosion on the faces usually caused by contaminant in the oil(fuel, antifreeze),or the biggest culprit is air entrainment in the oil. Those things will eat bearing overlay every time.I get 13-14 mpg if I drive somewhat civilized and stay out of the secondaries.Sounds like you have a great truck! My girlfriend can't stand to drive mine either.
