Well I'll be damned

Went down to work on my truck today (not much left to do ) and while I was working on it I started messing around in the cab then started shifting the gears to make sure the trans is ok and I'll be damned I have a 4 speed not a 5 speed! the idiot that owned the truck before me was counting the reverse gear as 5 (guess I should have checked that) so what can you guys tell me about the 4 speed?....is it better than the 5 speed or worse? and if it's a 4 speed what kind of trans do I have?

u have a t19 u have to try feely hard to break that thing it has a steal houseing i like mine just fine

It has 5 gears don't it??

'85 is a T19 I believe, If not it'll be a T18, either way they are tough transmissions.
The only real difference is 1st gear, syncro'd = T19, Non syncro = T18.

How can I tell witch one I have?.....if it tells you anything I have a curvy shifter.

what i was told right after i got on here was it will withstand a 10megaton blast and anything below that very well.

I think a t-19 is a 4 speed with a synchroed 1st gear. I think the first 5 speeds in these diesel IDI's were the ZF 5-speed.

The _only_ 5 speed behind the IDI is a ZF5.

As already stated, the T19 has a syncro'd first gear, T18 does not.

You can also crawl under and look at the trans, T19 has PTO mounts on both sides, T18 on one side.
