I'm attempting to revive a 64 F100 with a 292 ,I have 0 experience with Y-blocks .The truck has been sitting for a long time so I pulled the plugs dumped Marvel Mystery oil down every hole ,popped the valve covers and found a stuck valve soaked it down too. I let it set for a week checked it today the valve is free and turned the engine over by hand no problem hooked up a battery and nothing, pulled the starter it's rusted solid I have never seen this happen before . Where is a good place to find a starter?I thought it might be the same as a 6 cyl but it's not the same style.
I've been doing some looking around and I think I'm going to try the starter out of my 62 223 ,every where I look the 223 & 292 starters are the same part .
wow that starter looks nothing like the one that came out of my 59 292. like looks like a newer style standard ford starter. The one in mine has a big front shaft and the gear kicked in from the other direction or something ive never seen any thing like it. the easiest way to check would be to just put the two starters side by side and look at them. If the gear is the same size, tooth count, it has the same length front on it and it bolt up it should work no problem.
It has three mounting holes and I know it's a Y block dist is in back I believe its the original 292. My 223 starter has the big spring you mention Bill they are both manuals so I will give that one a try. The truck has not really been messed with very much the wiring harnesses are all intact and not spliced and diced. The truck only had 3 owners 1 was a big company that used for the maintenance crew , then someone used it for some type of business , then the man I got it from. It's just been sitting for quite awhile , I will try to remember to copy the numbers so it can be decoded.
Thanks
I have seen FE starters used before on a Y-Block when the ring gear on the flywheel was worn enough to not engage. Since it engages the other side of the ring gear it would prolong use fo the vehicle until the ring gear could be replaced. By the way nice 9N in the background
Note that not just any FE starter will work properly on a Y. It needs to be for a '64 or earlier FE application. That's not to say that the later starter won't turn the motor over, but the tooth pitch does not match and can potentially lead to trouble if used as a permanent replacement.
Bran new gear reduction starters are available for the Y from Automotive Electric Services. I've used one for probably the past 5 years now. It's smaller, lighter, and doesn't need to be rebuilt once a year, when compared to stock.

I've used one of the Automotive Electric Services starters for the past 4-5 years also. Wouldnt go back to the bulky original.
