The fact that she made it as far as she did (more than half way) indicates a fair amount of competency and experience to me.
Not fair, Clux. I didn't use the parents as an argument. I prefaced my statement with 'I have no proof.' That indicates that what I say is simply rumor, or hearsay. I heard it on a morning news show, but only as an aside from one of the commentators... more info will undoubtedly surface as time goes on. Afterall, as was mentioned previously, someone has to pay for the rescue operation. Why shouldn't the competency of Amanda's ability, and the competency of her parents to make such a decision be called into question?

Really?

Not fair to hold you to your own standards? Or does quoting anonymous morning show commentators qualify as proof?

What does paying for the rescue have to do with her competency? Some extremely competent sailors have been lost at sea. I don't see how she really had control over her mast being broken in a storm.
Again, Clux, prefacing a statement with 'I think' is completely different than spouting some off the wall fact that was used in a completely different context in the example you used against me.
...You know what? this is an argument that just ain't worth having....
Could be worse. She could get knocked up, or bring home some loser guy.
According to her wiki profile, the family are devout Christians, and the children are home-schooled. Better call Janet Reno.
I don't agree with you very often, but you're right. I supposed on some level, we should celebrate the independent attitude and strength of this young woman.
The only thing I can say for sure is that her parents enabled her to do it......Unless the 16-year old girl had, all with her own resources, access to an expensive boat, all the latest communications and navigation equipment, and weeks worth of supplies---with a credit line to purchase more at the various ports-of-call during the circumnavigation.
They had to give the green light. So the decision is theirs. Make your own judgments as you will.
I'm a supporter of her attempt and her parents allowing it.
Chicks can do stuff.
I have a 25 y/o friend that is an A-10 pilot in the AirNG. She scares me.
She solo'd at 11. It wasn't legal but she was making her instructor crazy.
None of us know the qualifications of the Sailor girl. She thought she could do it. I defer to the players.
Hindsight is a turd in a punchbowl. "I knew it was there...I didn't drink punch.". We didn't. We drank punch.
I'd ask the opposition....where do we get our risk takers if we limit the risk because of built in beliefs?? There will be no reward without girls(dudes also) that push the envelope....and parents that take the risk too.
I'm proud of the girl.
We let Ted Kennedy drive.....why can't this girl sail???
I have to say that I agree. With no risk there is no reward and chicks can do things. But, in the civilized world, she's still a minor, a child in my eyes. If she needed medical treatment, who will authorize this? Can she sign for prescription meds? Can she contract for and authorize repairs to her vessel? I suppose a 16 year old with her grit can get by with most anything, but at what risk? A spot in the Guinness Book? Is it worth her life?
Did Amelia Earhart change the world? Perhaps, decades later and it still wasn't worth her life.
