is this normal (long post)
i checked all fluids after about 100 miles of pulling, and noticed the anti-freeze level had drooped about an inch oil still looked full. toped off anti-freeze and its stayed the same sense. now in the last 200 miles (of the 1000 miles of towing) the injectors seemed to quite down a bit and power has picked up the motor is running smoother better acceleration pulling hills better, but i seem to have started using a little oil in the last 900 miles about i added a quart of oil and its just a smidgen below full. i also have some start up smoke (on cold start) witch could be due to glow plugs as i know i have a couple bad ones but i was running short on time and didn't have the cash to replace all of them so i didn't change any of them. i did not notice any start up smoke before leaving on the trip but it was a lot warmer at home when i left than what it is where i am now.
the truck still revs threw the entire rpm range with no hesitation or smoke. start up smoke goes away after driving a block or two. also i did not use a torque wrench on the injectors as i didn't look up the torque specs i just did it by feel. i think im just being paranoid but the drop in coolant level worried me a bit but probably just a air pocket as its stayed the same sense topping off.
the change in the sound of the injectors worries me although it seems to be running better but the change in sound combined with the oil consumption worries me. i also still have a little bit of a bluish tint to the fuel although more of a green color than before. and i only washed out the fuel filter in some clean diesel have not replaced it yet. im sure the filter plus residual oil threw the fuel system could be the cause of this. im hoping that i didn't maybe slightly ruin a o-ring by not using a torque wrench. although it dosent run like bad o-rings like it did before.
could the drop in oil level and change in the sound of injectors be due to an air pocket working its way out as well? when i put everything back together i just put the oil drain plugs back in the heads and put everything back together and cranked it 3 times at 20 seconds each time before it fired, i did not leave the plugs out until oil reached the bottom of them.
I will probably put new glow plugs in next month as well as put a torque wrench on the injector hold downs.
