After my recent issues with the CPS, I think i would change out the CPS just to see. You can always swap it back and if he has changed to the gray one, that might be an issue as well.

We'll try it. He is running on a black one right now, but he has a spare gray and another black.
Might not help, but with the weird crap mine was doing, who knows. Besides mine having a hiccup once in a while, it was also lugging and almost choking down when coasting to a stop. I thought I was having a TC unlocking issue but since I changed it out, it seems to be back to normal. That plus to feel of a lot more power has me thinking I need to change it out every couple of years just to keep it in check. I just finished towing my camper up the mountain today and my truck seemed to run better than it has in a long time, even seemed to shift better.
We didn't get a chance to do anything yesterday except change the cps. It didn't help. Hopefully this evening we can get his fuel pressure gauge installed. Which port on the fuel bowl should we use?
im reading your posts and wonering if it isnt an oring on the injector. i've seen them go in a way that it looks like youve shaved some off. under higher loads at warm temps they leak past. is there any oil in the fuel, un-usual smoking.
had to replace my fuel pump a couple months ago, but i was able to see it when it failed because ive got it gauged in the cab. it started by failing at higher loads then it just quit. (snowing heavy on the side of the highway, my extra fuel pump at 7 psi to supply my racor actually got me home, at a snails pace, buut it got me home...) so with the new pump in last week i saw the pressure dropping when at a medium load. i was stumped. ended up #7 injector bottom oring failing. replaced all 8 oring sets (just happened to have them..lol) and now shes back to normal.
make sure you have the right fitting to gauge the fuel bowl, the metal can strip real easy.

The port by the drain valve is filtered and the one on the driver's side is not. I would pick the filtered side since it is the closest to the injectors.

Thanks guys, we aren't gonna be able to fool with it tonight. One of Thomas' young'ens is sick. Hopefully we can work on it Tuesday or Wednesday evening. I'm gonna let him use my truck to get his hay and equipment in with until we can fix his.
There isn't any smoke from his exhaust. The fuel in the bowl is clean. BTW. He spent 54 dollars at NAPA for the fuel pressure gauge, the line and the fittings. Diesel Innovations has a kit for 59 bucks. So when I get ready to do this to my truck I'll be calling DI.
We got it fixed! It was the screens inside the mixing chamber, they were caked with black sludge. We went for a test drive and Thomas said that his truck had never ran so good.
Thanks for all the help and thanks to Guzzle for his writeup on the intank mods!
